Naffe Tusome Back to School Campaign
Goals of the Campaign
- Make sure all children, especially girls, return to school safely.
- Teach parents and communities why education is important.
- Solve problems like teenage pregnancies, poverty, and children dropping out of school.
- Bring together leaders, teachers, parents, and organizations to support children’s learning.
Support from Leaders
- Medard Lubega Sseggona (Busiro East MP): Help communities provide money and help for children to go back to school.
- Matia Lwanga Bwanika (LC V Chairperson): Asked the government to focus on education and support schools.
- Dragana Strinic (Save the Children Director): Said parents must make schools safe and supportive.
- Lilian Babirye (Child Rights Activist): Urged women to help girls return to school.
Community Participation
The campaign brings together district leaders, MPs, parents, teachers, and organizations. Leaders hold community meetings, radio talks, and outreach programs to explain parents’ role in education.
Authorities also monitor school attendance and take action against children who skip school. Special support is given to vulnerable children, like those who became pregnant or have special needs.
Challenges the Campaign Addresses
Wakiso District has one of the highest numbers of teenage pregnancies in Uganda, with over 10,000 girls affected during the COVID-19 lockdown. Many parents cannot afford school fees, uniforms, or books. Some children must work or care for siblings, so they cannot go to school.
Through Naffe Tusome, leaders track children who missed school, help them return, and provide guidance and support. Children are encouraged to wear school uniforms to feel part of the school community.
