Naffe Tusome Back to School Campaign

Wakiso District leaders, led by Hon. Betty Ethel Naluyima, started the Naffe Tusome campaign. The goal is to help children, especially girls, return to school after COVID-19 closures. Schools reopened on January 10, 2022, but many children could not go back because of poverty, lack of school materials, early pregnancies, or work at home. Hon. Naluyima said parents must take responsibility and support their children’s education. She explained that children succeed when families, communities, and leaders work together to help them.

Goals of the Campaign

Support from Leaders

Community Participation

The campaign brings together district leaders, MPs, parents, teachers, and organizations. Leaders hold community meetings, radio talks, and outreach programs to explain parents’ role in education.

Authorities also monitor school attendance and take action against children who skip school. Special support is given to vulnerable children, like those who became pregnant or have special needs.

Challenges the Campaign Addresses

Wakiso District has one of the highest numbers of teenage pregnancies in Uganda, with over 10,000 girls affected during the COVID-19 lockdown. Many parents cannot afford school fees, uniforms, or books. Some children must work or care for siblings, so they cannot go to school.

Through Naffe Tusome, leaders track children who missed school, help them return, and provide guidance and support. Children are encouraged to wear school uniforms to feel part of the school community.
